A LASTING LEGACY

A Duke Children's supporter leaves a lasting legacy

Written by Bernadette Gillis

Each year, the MIX 101.5 Radiothon moves listeners to open their wallets in support of Duke Children’s. Agnes Wong of Durham counts herself among the thousands touched by the stories of hope shared annually by patients and their families over the radio.

“I have always had a heart for children,” says Wong, who has 17 nieces and nephews she has watched grow into healthy adults over the years. She even had a hand in helping to raise some of them. Wong says she feels fortunate knowing that they never had any major health problems. Listening to the touching stories during the Radiothon reminded her that not everyone is as fortunate.

“We are lucky,” Wong says of her family. “Nobody has any health issues. But I felt bad for others. And that’s why I’m willing to help however I can.”

In addition to calling in to make a modest pledge each year, Wong also has volunteered several years answering calls during the Radiothon, which is now in its 25th year. Recently, she decided to make a commitment that will have a lasting impact. As part of her estate plan, she included a bequest in her will to support Duke Children’s.

Wong hopes that her giving will inspire the children treated at Duke to one day pay it forward. “Hopefully when they grow up, they will help others too.”
