About Children’s Miracle Network
Children's Miracle Network (formerly Children's Miracle Network Hospitals) was founded in 1983 by Joe Lake, Mic Shannon, Marie Osmond, and John Schneider. Inspired by the March of Dimes model, CMN fundraising began as a telethon and has expanded to a national movement to change kids’ health: 170 member hospitals across the United States and Canada, dozens of partnerships with national and regional corporate entities, and multiple peer-to-peer fundraising programs that empower individual groups to give back to their local children’s hospital. Duke Children’s celebrated 40 years of CMN membership in 2024.
While the movement is national, the impact is local: CMN's focus has always been on keeping dollars at the local children’s hospital in the community where the money is raised.
Duke Children’s is the local member hospital for the Triangle, Triad, Fayetteville, and Wilmington. All CMN fundraising in these communities benefits the patients and families who come to Duke for world-class pediatric care.
North Carolina is home to two other CMN member hospitals in addition to Duke Children’s: East Carolina University Health in Greenville and Levine Children’s in Charlotte.
You can help support Duke Children’s by shopping and donating at our Children’s Miracle Network partners and supporting events like Radiothon, Miracle Network Dance Marathon, and Extra Life! Look for the yellow Children’s Miracle Network balloon at your local businesses, restaurants, and organizations to know that they are a valued Children’s Miracle Network partner.
The Miracle Balloon icon was created in 1986 by the Hartford, Connecticut, CMN region. The balloon is now the national symbol for CMN.

In 2026 the brand evolved -- CMN is keeping the iconic balloon but launching a new look to better reflect the power of the network to connect partners, donors, and hospitals and inspire greater impact for kids.
